Object Perception & Motivation in males

  • You have normal/corrected to normal vision
  • Like chocolate

You cannot take part if any of the below is true:

  • You have any food allergies or intolerances
  • You have a history of anaphylaxis related to food
  • You are diabetic
  • You are currently taking medication which affects vision, attention or appetite
  • You took part in the study; ‘object perception and cognition’ or ‘object perception and hunger’.

Physical activity and appetite study

Duration: 2 sessions (one 8 hours and one 30 minutes) at 3 time points over a period of 28 days

Number of sessions: Six

Location: University of Liverpool (3 visits)/Aintree hospital (3 visits)

You can take part if you meet these criteria:

  • Physically active (>10,000 steps a day)
  • Able to reduce this activity for 14 days
  • Male or female, aged 18-60 years

You cannot take part if any of the below is true:

  • Smoker
  • Diabetes or a history of cardiovascular, kidney, respiratory or endocrine disease

Alcohol, social interaction and comedy perception

Duration: 80 minutes (approximately)

We are seeking mixed sex pairs of volunteers to take part. If you’re interested you must bring a friend of the opposite sex along with you and share the below information with them.

You can take part if you meet these criteria:

  • Be Aged 18-25.
  • Fluent English speaker.
  • Drink at least 10 units of alcohol per week. For example, there are 10 units of alcohol in three and a half pints of lager OR five 175ml glasses of wine.
  • Provide a breathalyser reading of 0.0mg/l at the beginning of the study
  • Consume a light meal (i.e. not high in fat) approximately 1 hour before the study.

You cannot take part if any of the below is true:

  • You have ever received treatment for an alcohol problem (or are currently seeking treatment), or are currently aiming to reduce your drinking.
  • You are taking medication which may be affected by drinking alcohol (e.g. antidepressants, benzodiazepines), this includes cold and flu medicine such as paracetamol.
  • You are currently suffering from or recovering from any illness that may increase your sensitivity to alcohol, e.g. cold, flu.
  • If you are breastfeeding or pregnant.

Study description:

Alcohol’s effect on memory and taste perception of food

Duration: 100 minutes

Number of sessions: One

Location:Eleanor Rathbone Building

You can take part if you meet these criteria:

  • Are aged 18- 65
  • Fluent English speakers
  • Enjoy consuming cookies
  • Are not vegan or vegetarian
  • Are regular alcohol drinkers. You should only participate if you a) drink alcohol at least once per week and drink at least 10 alcohol units per week. For example, there are 10 units of alcohol in three and a half pints of lager OR five 175ml glasses of wine. This inclusion is to help ensure you do not feel ill if you are given alcohol to drink during the experiment.
  • Provide an alcohol breathalyser reading of 0.0 mg/l. As you may be given alcohol during the experiment, we will ask you to provide a breathalyser reading before starting the experiment.
  • Are able to consume a light meal (i.e. not high in fat) approx. 1 hour before each session.

You cannot take part if any of the below is true:

  • Have ever received treatment for an alcohol problem, or if you are currently seeking such treatment or trying to cut down how much alcohol you drink.
  • If you currently or have previously had an eating disorder.
  • Currently taking any medication which may be affected by drinking alcohol (e.g., antidepressants, benzodiazepine), this includes cold and flu medicine, such as paracetamol.
  • Currently suffering from or recovering from any illness that may increase your sensitivity to alcohol, e.g. cold, flu.
  • FEMALES: Breastfeeding or pregnant. As the experiment may involve giving alcohol to drink, if you are pregnant or there is any possibility of you being pregnant or you have had unprotected sexual intercourse since your last period you will NOT be eligible to take part in this study.
  • Be taking any medication that may influence appetite, with the exception of oral contraceptives.
  • Have any food allergies or intolerances.

Study description:

This study is investigating how varying alcohol dosage can affect memory processes (measured by delayed recall of a word list), and alter taste perception of certain food.  Continue reading

You can take part if you meet these criteria:

  • You own one dog
  • You typically feed your dog one or two meals a day, at roughly the same time of day
  • You have an adult dog that does not suffer from any condition that might affect his/her appetite
  • You live in/near Liverpool

You cannot take part if any of the below is true:

  • Your dog is known to be nervous/fearful/aggressive around strangers or food
